Steel in the process of heating and heat preservation, the surface of steel by the effect of the surrounding atmosphere of oxidation, the loss of all or part of the carbon content, which makes the steel surface carbon content lower phenomenon known as decarbonization. The area causing the reduction of carbon content on the steel surface is called decarbonization layer, and the depth of surface carbon content is called decarbonization layer depth.
Decarbonization layer is divided into full decarbonization layer and partial decarbonization layer. The total depth of decarbonization layer is the sum of total decarbonization layer and partial decarbonization layer.
